A strange occurence
Not sure what made me look at readersdigest.com.au but I was certainly
surprised. Using Firefox, I find my full screen suddenly taken down to the lower
size after a little while. As I changed from one part of the site to another I
expanded the display again only to find messages on the bottom line resulting in
another decrease in the screen display.
I took some considerable time before it finally settled over a 10-15 minute
period when I was trying to read 'Laughter is the best medicine'.
Interested in why that should be so - I looked at options and went in and
'deleted all cookies' and the display started varying again from Large to Small.
I then tried MS Explorer and it display fine with no variations - I could not
find a place in that program to kill the cookies so that may have been the
reason.
I have not had that kind of trouble with any other site than the readerdigest.

Application popup: Windows - Virtual Memory Minimum Too Low ....
Hello,
I work for a public school system running both Windows XP Pro (SP2) and
Windows 2000 Pro (SP4) PCs. I have a strange problem that started around
12/13/07 on only my Windows 2000 PCs and has been intermittently happening on
most if not all of my 2000 PCs.
The user gets a popup message on the screen "Virtual Memory Minimum Too
Low: Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the size of
your virtual memory paging file". They just click on the OK button and it
goes away and they continue to work. All these PCs have been running very
well until aroung 12/13/07. I am running a WSUS server and just so happens
that seven Windows 2000 updates where pushed out to the PCs (coincidence ?).
My Windows XP PCs are not experiencing this problem.
Could one of these updates have caused this ? I did nothing to these PCs
before the updates and they were all running fine. I checked the Event
Viewer on multiple 2000 PCs and they all started experiencing the popup
messages around the time of the updates. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.
Thanks,
Kurt ....

Restore or turn on a registry key on C drive from a different hard
Here's the situation:
I turned off a registry key that somehow disables my mouse and I can
no longer use the drive as it boots up ok to the msconfig dialog box
(the one that states you modified something) and then I can go no
further. I can't tab or do anything at this point. The mouse is
there on the screen but it doesn't move. I know the exact registry
key that I need to turn back on but I just can't get to it. I've
tried booting into safe mode and this doesn't work as my mouse doesn't
work there and I've tried booting into last known good configuration
and that doesn't work either. I've tried usb and ps2 mouses and
neither move but they show up on the screen.
I have another bootable hard drive in my PC so can I boot into it and
then somehow turn on the registry key in my C drive? I do have a
system state backup as well.
This is a strange situation which I've never encountered before but
I've gotten to the point to where I need to be careful as I've turned
off the computer several times from the 'on' button (after tried a few
things) and now my desktop goes into error mode. Tag: Excellent website for MCSE certification Tag: 562361

Windows 2000 Powered NAS Upgrade
Hi all, is it possible (I am sure the answer is no already!) to upgarde a NAS

nVidia drivers for Windows 2000
Did nVidia stop making drivers for Windows 2000? I've noticed the
latest driver for my video card (a GeForce 7900 GTO) is from May, last
year:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_94.24_2.html
Exploring their list of 8xxx series video cards reveals they have
never released drivers for Windows 2000 for that entire line of cards.
Following ATI's example, they are just moving away from the last good
Windows operating system, now only supporting Windows XP and Vista (my
previous ATI Radeon card's official drivers were last released in
February 2006). Are these companies choosing the right path in
ditching Windows 2000? Alot of people still use it. I bet nVidia gets
alot of calls about, and returns of, their 8000 series cards from
people using Windows 2000.
It's nice to see that there are still Omega Drivers being made for
Windows 2000. I am planning to switch over to those in the near future. Tag: Excellent website for MCSE certification Tag: 562355

Funny shutdown problem
I run Windows 2000 Professional on my computer. Most of the time it shuts
down without any problem whatsoever but SOMETIMES it 'hangs up' ---
After the window that says "saving your personal settings..." disappears, I
can hear the hard drives stopping but the screen remains the same color and I
can still see the cursor only I cannot move it. I have to resort to using the
power supply switch to manually shut down the system, when I start the
computer again everything is fine and it does not do any error checks on the
hard drives.
At first I thought it was the power supply's problem so I replaced it but
the problem still exists. The weirdest part of all this is that it seems the
problem occurs or does not depending on the programs I run and how frequently
I run them - for instance, if I use the computer to type an essay and view a
few webpages it would shut down normally, but if I play a large game for,
say, a half hour, the problem almost always occurs.
P.S. Sorry for my long post but I found it hard to describe :-) Tag: Excellent website for MCSE certification Tag: 562337

How to create a registry Key with Regedt32.exe ?
I am cautiously attempting to insert a key into my registry but the
instructions seems to miss some details. I have done this before but now
seem to have lost my way, perhaps some one can guide me back on track.
Below is the instruction set:
---------------------------------------------------
How Do I Enable Windows Installer Logging?
Windows includes a registry-activated logging services to help diagnose
Windows Installer issues. This article describes how to enable this
logging service.
Open the registry with Regedt32.exe and create the following path and keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer
Reg_SZ: Logging
Value: voicewarmup
The letters in the value field can be in any order. Each letter turns on
a different logging mode. Each letter's actual function is as follows
for MSI version 1.1:
v - Verbose output
o - Out-of-disk-space messages
i - Status messages
c - Initial UI parameters
e - All error messages
w - Non-fatal warnings
a - Start up of actions
r - Action-specific records
m - Out-of-memory or fatal exit information
u - User requests
p - Terminal properties
+ - Append to existing file
! - Flush each line to the log
"*" - Wildcard, log all information except for the v option. To include
the v option, specify "/l*v".
Once activated, the log files that are generated may be found in your
%TEMP% directory.
---------------------------------------------------
The problem is with the insertion of the "Reg_SZ" and the "Value".
I've inserted the Installer Path >>
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer
Edit>>AddKey>>Keyname Reg_SZ [Class left MT]
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer\Reg_SZ
Edit>>Add Value>>Value Name Logging [DataType - Reg_SZ auto loaded]
Data > displays Logging:Reg_SZ: ???
Need some help here as I do not wish to screw up the Registry
many questions relevant to set up, is value a subtree of Reg_SZ etc.? Tag: Excellent website for MCSE certification Tag: 562327

Autorun.inf virus
My virus Scanner AVG has just reported a virus in a file that's been
siting in a backup directory on my system for just about a year without
being previously flagged (I guess yesterday's update got it).
What surprised me was that the file reported is an application's
autorun.inf which is a text file. When I opened the file in wordpad I
saw this
[AutoRun]
open=RavMon.exe
shell\open=´ò¿ª(&O)
shell\open\Command=RavMon.exe
shell\explore=×ÊÔ´¹ЬÀíÆ÷(&X)
shell\explore\Command="RavMon.exe -e"
(I hope the strange characters in the 3rd and 5th lines show up).
Is it possible that this could act as a virus/malware? Tag: Excellent website for MCSE certification Tag: 562312

Switching primary IDE cable to secondary slot, and visa versa, and adding a 3rd Hard Drive
On this older computer I somehow have on the Secondary IDE cable/slot the hard drive with C,D,E partitions. The Primary
IDE cable/slot has the hard drive with G,H,I,J,K partitions. Don't ask me how, but F shows up (using Ztree to view it)
as a mapped partition on my other computer. F doesn't show up in My Computer, although other mapped partitions do.
Only two computers on my LAN.
I'm now about to add a 3rd and larger hard drive and I'd like to get this all straightened out before I put it into the
mix.
First question is: if I move the cable so that the C,D,E hard drive is plugged into the Primary IDE slot, will these
partitions still be C,D, and E? And same with the other hard drive, will the partitions retain their current letters.
Since it was originally set up this way, I'd guess that Win2000 retains the partition letters once they are assigned.
Is this correct?
Also, currently the CD ROM drive shares the Primary IDE cable with the G,H,I,J,K hard drive.
Second question: what would be the best way to set up and place these drives after I add the third.
C,D,E drive is 40 GB
G,H,I,J,K drive is 80 GB
new drive is 160 GB
I've read that the drive that shares a cable with a CD ROM will have it's transfer speed limited by the speed of the CD
ROM. Is this a significant factor. And how would I handle this.
Thanks for any opinions and advice on this.

Windows 2000 (service pack 2) explorer corrupts current folder
Dear all,
I just can't believe that there is no solution for the following
problem other than switching to Windows XP or at least to some
replacement for Explorer.EXE:
If I open the Windows explorer with its standard setting (tree view in
the left pane shows all the folders) and let it open, I experience the
following problem after the Explorer has been idle for some minutes:
When I return to
explorer and attempt to click on another folder or a file in another
folder I get the message
"C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Desktop\desktop\[]\tmp is not
accessible. The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is
incorrect".
It seems that explorer replaces the current directory drive letter
with "C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Desktop\desktop\[]". The
created
folder name has an imbedded control character displayed as a square
symbol. This is an invalid path and results in the access violation.
Explorer must be terminated at this point because it becomes
completely unusable.
In addition, some of the folder icons in the treeview are destroyed
(either replaced by wrong icons or not shown at all).
Here's a screenshot (unfortunately, german version of Windows 2000,
but I hope it gives a clue):
http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/1313/explorermackeip6.png
I just can't believe that there is really NO fix for that! There were
some hints referring to memory (RAM) and filesystem issues but they
are not applicable here. The RAM installed in this computer is error-
free, and chkdsk did not find any problems in the filesystems
whatsoever.
Please help!
Thank you very much in advance and kind regards,

Unable to open files after chkdsk
We have a windows 2000 PC running in our office where all our common files
are stored. Basically all our word documents, spreadsheets and our databases.
The system reported a problem on the one hard drive where all the files are
stored and requested that chkdsk be run on reboot. This was done and windows
went ahead and repaired a number of files.
All the files are still there, and even the correct file sizes are
displayed, however we are unable to access 50% of them. When you try open a
file in word, word tries to import the file saying it doesn't recognise the
file type. The same with excel, PDF's, and JPG's.
As Murphyâ??s law would have it, it seems its most of the critical files that
we currently need that can't open. Our backup system is automated as well,
and as luck would have it, we only picked up the problem after the backups
where over written.
Is there anyway to repair these files? Tag: Excellent website for MCSE certification Tag: 562266

Apps in Programs / Startup fail to launch.
I've got Windows 2000 Professional Build 2195. However, I have had
this problem on and off for years, at least since Win 9x.
One or more apps named in menu Start / Programs / Startup never
launches, and nothing I try works.
If I click on these failing items MANUALLY (i.e. click on the icon
*in* Startup), they DO launch fine. I mean, huh?
Example: Yesterday, I had Windows Explorer, Excel and Firefox in
Startup, but only Excel and Firefox launched on startup. Win Explorer
was a complete no-show.
Today, after mucking around and re-creating the shortcut to Firefox,
now only Excel launches, and FIREFOX won't start.
I fail to understand how an OS can be this out of control.
What's going on?
Thanks much.

Hard Drive
I have an old computer with 2 hard drives running Windows 2000. I
believe they are both SCSI.
My C: drive is a Healthy Boot NTFS (Disk 0) and working fine. It is
only 9.32 GB. I said it was old!
My other drive (Disk 1) is the problem. Part of it is Healthy
(active) with a primary partition of 9.32 GB. It is mirroring my c:
drive. It has no drive letter assigned to it.
The rest of the Disk 1 drive is 47.9 GB and contains some important
storage files that I would like to access (but not enough to spend the
$$$ for data recovery, as I have backups of the important ones). It
used to be my d: drive, but something happened and it no longer shows
up in Windows Explorer. Computer Management shows it is Unallocated.
Anyway, the files are still there, according to R-Studio. Does anyone
know how I should partition/ assign a drive letter so I can access the
files in Windows Explorer, or at least make the unallocated portion of
the drive accessible again?

Need to get passed the CTRL+ALT+Delete to start Windows 2000
My cousin brought home a computer from work that was running Windows 2000
(not sure of version). Originally, the "CTRL+ALT+Delete to start.." message
appeared and when name/password were entered, system started without problem;
and yes, there was a domain name shown on the log-in window. As per work's
instructions, she deleed the software (via control panel/remove) that started
the network log-on screen. Now the problem.
After re-starting, the "CTRL+ALT+Delete to start " window has changed and
the domain name area in not shown. The system will not accept the
name/password only and keeps saying to check the domain name. How do I get
passed the CTRL+ALT+Delete log-0n window to try and repair? I have tried
booting to safe mode, but the "press CTRL+ALT+Delete " still appears, with
the same error message. What am I doing wrong? I do not have a great deal of

a...umm...well, it DID rhyme!
Everyday.
You're mesmerized for hours by the wonders of Internet business - you
market, you negotiate, you design, you submit, you research, you
chat...a lot...
Everyday.
Enthralled and empowered by your cyber-independence, you plan and
scheme, plot and dream.
While life in the REAL world goes on around you...
"Hey Mom, can I have lunch now?? It's three o'clock!!"
"Huh? Whaa...yeah, five minutes, honey...lessee, click here..."
Funny how the daily grind hasn't ground to a halt...
"Dad?? Couldya sign this? It just says that you know about my tryin'
to burn down the school and ya assume full financial
responsibility...No big deal, couple alarms..."
"Darn HTML code...Hmm? Yeah...five minutes, umm...son??"
Things just keep rolling on...

Computer is almost useless due to uninstall of service pack.
This I really regret that I did: After updating my Windows 2000 Pro computer
with the updates such as service pack 1 and update roll up that it
recommended using Automatic Updates I noticed that the space of my hard drive
went down the drain and decided to uninstall the two which I assume were
taking up the space.
I recall that while I was uninstalling them, a dialog box appeared with a
warning that some other programs may not function if they are uninstalled
and looked them up on the list and thought in my head: "these are not
important to me anyway so continue"
but the service pack after uninstalling it required the computer to be
restarted which I did but boy was I blown away when I realized that I just
paralyzed the computer. a dialog box pups up as soon as Windows is about to
startup with the title: Services.exe-entry point not found and the message
window stated: the procedure entry point IsWellKnownSid could not be located
in the dynamic link library ADVAPI32.DLL. because of this Windows starts up
slowly, network connections are not available, Explorer crashes when I do
mouse commands, programs won't lunch and printers are not available.
I know I made a mistake but the question is wasn't the two updates supposed
to revert the computer back to its original state after uninstalling them?
This problem has made my computer almost useless to say that I need serious
help here and if anyone here has any info and sources on how I can fix this
I'll appreciate it.

Moving user to new domain
I have small regional offices that are configured as separate domains from my
headquarters, all in the same forest, though. I have configured logon scripts
in each of those domains to map network drives. Each of them are, of course,
different. When I move a user from one office to the other, is there any way
to get them to use the logon script besides moving them from one domain to
the other? And is using the ADMT the only way to move the user, besides
deleting and recreating the account in the new domain? Obviously, this is a
problem because it also deletes the email account.
If ADMT if the only or preferred way, what are the specific instructions for
just simply moving a user between domains? I looked at the ADMT user manual
and it seemed mostly to address whole domain migration.
Any help would be greatly appreciated Tag: Excellent website for MCSE certification Tag: 562188

Disk Free Space Alert
I've gotten burned twice, now, by not having any automatic alert that informs
me when my file server space is getting low. I can't seem to find anything
built-in to Windows to do this. What is the suggested way to configure
automatic alerts when a logical drive is running out of space? Tag: Excellent website for MCSE certification Tag: 562185

Logon Error from KB 824302
A standalone Win2000 Pro/sp4 machine cannot be logged on to either in normal
or safe mode as the error "The system cannot log you on now because the
domain xxx is not available" as detailed in KB Article 824302. I contacted
MS Support and they sent me two .EXE files that apparently fix the problem,
but how are these fixes supposed to be run if the machine cannot be logged on
to? The Readme.txt file just says to refer to the KB article - which does
not really have instructions. I also tried booting to a CD but they would
not run that way either. In addition I remotely edited the registry from
another machine changing the WinLogonCache value to 0, as well as manually
copied all of the DLL's from the KB article from a functional machine to the
problem machine, but to no avail. Any help on this one would be greatly
appreciated. Tag: Excellent website for MCSE certification Tag: 562184

Stubborn Hard Drive Doesn't Want to Revert to Basic Disk
Greetings,
Some time ago I aborted a conversion to dynamic disk in my W2K Pro
machine. I have attached a 250 Gb drive as slave, went into Disk
Management, converted it to dynamic. Then, when I issued the same
command for the first disk, the "Are you sure?" message reminded me of
the drawbacks, so I clicked "No" and reverted disk 2.
Problem is, ever since then disk 2 stubbornly shows as a 128 Gb drive
under Disk Management. DOS tools see it properly, and I was able to
partition it (32, 80, and 130 Gb), but almost every other day Windows
would tell me that the third partition (the one that crosses this
imaginary 128 Gb border) is corrupted, would run CHKDSK on it on
startup, and sometimes fix it, sometimes corrupt all the (test) data
on it beyond recognition.
I thought: "Dynamic disk info is stored in the last 1 Mb of the drive,
right?" Last night I ran Boot and Nuke and had it write zeroes to the
entire disk 2. Booted W2K after that... and what do you know - not
only did the drive show up as 128 Gb, it was once again labeled
"Dynamic"!
If anyone can shed some light on what the heck is going on, I'm sure I
will not be the only one to be enlightened. Thanks!

Minimise Command Window
I have a .bat file in my startup folder that runs a command in a command

Win 2000 Pro Printing Prob Update
I appreciate the feedback yesterday. I dumped my drivers both from
within the control panel and in the registry. I uplugged the printer,
turned off the spooler service, and shut down / rebooted computer. I
then turned printer on, reconnected cable and restarted the computer.
The problem still exists. Upon startup, gibberish comes out of the
printer, and upon printing any document, gibberish comes out. This all
started from within a visual basic app, when I went to print a form
without indicating a date range on the form. It is a billing program. I
am at a loss. Any additional info would be appreciated. Tag: Excellent website for MCSE certification Tag: 562176
